Day 47 - Amish Country

A trip today into the heart of Pennsylvania Amish country.   Between Lancaster and, believe it or not, Intercourse, Penn.  We saw lots of the horse and buggy crowd.  A simple life.  The farms were amazing.   Huge houses with clothes hanging out on the lines.  Gigantic barns, and fields of corn.

We passed several school houses.  This one was in session and we could see the rows of desks through the front door and the teacher walking the aisle.

We passed this one during recess.  They were having a baseball game and just finished an inning.

The men and horses and mules were at work in the fields.

We had homemade apple fritters and non Starbucks coffee for breakfast.  Great fritters.

Then we roamed the shops.  There is a lot of very nice stuff.  And..... an amazing amount of food.

Grabbed a shot of this elderly couple waiting for the bus.

Where did they come up with the name of this town?

The food was amazing.   We have been trying not to gain weight on this trip and we have been pretty careful about eating.   But today.

Samples everywhere and everything was soooooo good.

After shopping we drove some of the small roads and into some small towns.   There are so many places you could just build a postcard out of each one of them.

We found a few covered bridges.

Some were still drivable.

Some were not.

About 3pm we saw lots of kids riding bikes home from school or in the family buggy.

So many great homes and buildings.

We got home about 5pm and took inventory of our day.
3 ears of corn
2 jars of pineapple salsa
1 jar of corn salsa
1 jar of pickles
1 jar of beets
A loaf of pecan bread
2 packages of cookies
1 bar of cookie and cream fudge
1 bar of rocky road fudge
2 coconut candies
2 turtle candies
1 pint of cranberry chicken spread
1 bag homemade chips
1 box of fresh blueberries
2 shoofly pies

Since you guys have been sort of taking this journey with us, how about helping us eat some of this?

  4. I can almost taste the fritter!! Loved the covered bridges, houses and slower pace there. We went from there back home and straight into soccer and school. It made me think we were doing life all wrong.
