Day 14 - Deadwood

Deadwood today.  (No, I am not talking about my physical status this morning)  The town of Deadwood, South Dakota.  We started our day by getting a bagel at the local bagelry.   Is that a word?  Then laid out by the pool for a couple of hours.  (went to church last night).

Then it was time to go searching for just the right piece of Black Hills Gold.  We got advice from the gal at the RV park's front desk.

Located a great little pinky ring.

Then off to Deadwood.  About a 45 minute drive.  There are still a lot of Harleys around even though today is the last day of the Sturgis rally.

Had a great lunch/dinner with entertainment.  Western singer and lots of the remaining hard core bikers' tattoos to look upon.

A couple of locals hanging out.

Then we went over to the bar where Wild Bill Hickok was shot and killed.

He always sat with his back to the wall.  On this rare occasion he was playing poker with his back to the door.  A man whose brother had been shot and killed by Hickok entered and shot Wild Bill in the back of the head.   He slumped onto the table, shot dead.  His poker hand revealed two black aces and two black eights.  Coining what is still known today in poker as the 'dead man's hand'.

Then we went to Lead, SD to a gold mine.   The old way was to elevator down into the mine.   This picture shows the new way, stripping away the surface as well as a mine shaft.   41 million ounces of gold have come out of this mine.  Ending out day back in Rapid City at.... Where else?  Starbucks.

Bye bye Rapid City, tomorrow is a five to six hour drive across South Dakota to Sioux Falls.

  1. That's an interesting story about Wild Bill. Such a crazy time in history. I find it fascinating. On a side note, cute ring, mom!

    1. Thanks, Lori. I like it but the sales lady had obviously dealt with no decision makers before. She was a whirlwind!
