Day 81 - Sweet Home Alabama

Drove for an hour late this morning into Alabama.  My older brother Lee was born in Montgomery, Alabama but it is too far away to check out.   Another time.

This is a Furnace used by the Confederates to make pig iron used for cannons and other war materials.   The Union Army led by General Sherman chased Confederate General Johnson from Chattanooga to Atlanta with battles all along the way.   This furnace was destroyed by the Union Army and rebuilt after the war.  That's Martha standing at the base.  It is huge.

A view of the river from the furnace.

We went to a great diner for lunch called Martha's Skillet that claims to have home cooked meals.  How could we not stop with a name like that?

A very cool little place, each table had an American Flag on it.   Everyone in there was friendly and talkative.  Awesome friendly.   Martha herself was standing behind the counter as she has been doing for over 30 years.   Talkative and  full of smiles.

It is home cooked as advertised.  Buffet style or table service, I opted for the buffet.  This is actually a picture of my second plate.   After eating the first helping it was so nice I couldn't resist returning and getting another.  We don't cook in the trailer so this was only the second time since we left that we really had home cooked food.  So good,  it is my kind of food for sure.   I wish that Martha's Skillet  was on our route to Pigeon Forge tomorrow as the breakfasts must be wonderful.

Then into Adairsville, Georgia.   Our trailer is parked about two miles outside of the Historic Downtown area pictured here.

The County Court House has quite a history.

Made up of a single room, you can see the cell situated on the side of the room allowing the accused to view the proceedings,  prior to hanging him.

Disney made a movie about the Great Train Chase.   It took place during the Civil War.   This is the Adairsville Train Station.

Across from the station is the house where Charles Arthur Floyd was raised until the age of 10 when his family moved to Oklahoma.   It sits just across the tracks from the Adairsville Station.

Charles is better known as 'Pretty Boy Floyd' and rose to the distinction of the FBI's most wanted list and Public Enemy Number One.  He was number two until the FBI killed John Dillinger, then he moved up in ranks to number one.  He robbed banks and while in the banks tore up the mortgage papers of the surrounding farmers before leaving.  He was shot and killed by FBI agents on October 22, 1934 at the age of 30.  86 years ago tomorrow.  His Oklahoma funeral is still on record as the largest attended funeral in the state's history reaching nearly 20,000 in attendance.

These three markers are erected on the spot of the Battle of Adairsville.  Confederate General Johnson tried to lead General Sherman's troops into a trap here but the terrain proved unsatisfactory for his needs.  The battle resulted in 200 Union dead and an undetermined number of Confederate soldiers lost and was one of many Battles fought in the campaign to move into and to take Atlanta.

If these walls could talk.   So many beautiful abandon homes like this one.

We added Alabama to our map.

We are so excited to have Lori and Brent joining our travels tomorrow and for the upcoming week.   We will go to Dollywood, Nashville, and Memphis together.  Wish you were coming too!
