Day 66 - AM Hurricane Update

I have not missed a days post yet.  We may lose power or internet tomorrow, Friday, or Saturday so if I don't post you'll know why.   We should be out of the thunder of the storm by Saturday noon.   We are moving to an RV Park in Central Florida Saturday.   Currently we are in Sylvania, Georgia.  If you look at the map here and follow the pink Georgia state line North East from Savannah you can see the city of Sylvania on the map.  We are in the woods 16 miles North of Sylvania.  It is about 90 miles inland.

Day 65 - The middle of Nowhere

A 'hopefully safe distance' from the major expected impact of Hurricane Matthew we are tucked into the woods 90 miles from the coast.  We got up in the dark this morning at 6am and broke camp to start our six hour drive unsure of what traffic we may encounter.  Heading East and then South we encountered very very little traffic.   I haven't mentioned in any of the posts how great the truck is doing.   It's diesel Cummins Engine and seven speed transmission roll along like it isn't even stressed when going uphill.  It drives smooth and pulling a fifth wheel is many times easier than a trailer.  We encountered a few windy areas but for the most part we are currently in the 'calm before the storm'.

A very big change from the scenery we have had in Boston, New York, and Washington.

We passed the failed hotel that Trump listed as the 950 million dollar loss on his taxes.

Just kidding Trump fans.  We have to maintain a sense of humor.
Actually the beautiful homes Martha and I both love that we have shown on our previous posts are no where in sight around this part of our country.   The towns we pass through are small and operating at about 50% with the other buildings boarded up.  Not because of the hurricane, because of the economy.  Most of the homes are modular or trailers.

While driving on Hwy 301 West, which is a pretty non traveled roadway, we crossed Interstate 95.  It is the major North South route and while on an overpass that was in the boonies, no towns around and no reason for traffic to be backed up or moving less than the I95 speed limit of 70mph, it was surprising to see the traffic moving about 35mph and backed up as far as the eye can see heading out of Charleston.   Charleston is under an evacuation order and it is obvious that order is being taken seriously and Charleston must be becoming deserted by the number of cars moving Northward.   The only vehicles traveling toward Charleston in the South bound lanes were emergency vehicles, National Guard vehicles, and multiple school busses.   I assume that they were heading to Charleston to evacuate people.

Looking the other direction, Northward,  you can see the traffic is heavy moving North and non existent moving in the Southbound lanes.  Sorry its blurred but we were moving West at about 55mph.

We moved into Georgia just a few miles later.

The RV Park is on Old River Road.   We had some trouble locating it as it was barely marked with a street sign and it is a dirt road.  Even the GPS in the truck and Mapquest on Martha's phone couldn't agree on where the 'road' was located.  Two miles up this straight dirt road we came to an 'RV Park' if you want to call it that.  About a dozen RV's parked in a sort of a field, 15 miles from the nearest town, and 50 miles from the nearest Starbucks (thank goodness for Starbuck K-cups).  Amazingly enough there is full hook ups (water, sewer, 50amp electricity, and internet) but none of the shower rooms or a pool that most of the places we have stayed feature.  Funny too, because most of our stops are only two days, and because of the hurricane, we will be here four.

A panorama of what the middle of nowhere looks like.  It is actually right adjoining to a public hunting area and I think that everyone here is out hunting as we are alone in the park.  Not even a manager around.  Nothing to site see around here except maybe an occasional stray bullet.

No blue skies to be seen anywhere and tomorrow the rain is supposed to start.   The highest winds from the Hurricane are supposed to reach here on Friday early and only attain a 24mph top speed.   Thanks for joining us and why not grab your duck call and come on by, the coffee is on.

Day 64 - Run Forest Run

I hate zoos.  I feel like I am visiting Folsom Prison when we go to one.   One of the things we love about Tahoe is that we get to see bears living a free life.  No cage.  I have been looking forward to seeing alligator's in the wild.  Of course, from the safety of the truck.  We haven't seen any yet but seeing this sign is getting me hopeful.

So last night we sat on the Braswell's balcony and visited with Diane and Jim.  We stayed at their condo last night.

With the view of the beach to the East, the sun setting in the West, the wine bottle within reach, we had a really nice visit.

We walked over to a great restaurant after the sun set.  Havana's.   I had such a good meal.   A big bowl of clam chowder, and a Salmon Caesar Salad.  I expected the Salmon to be sprinkled over the top of the salad.   When it arrived, WOW! a nice big entree sized piece of blackened Salmon lying on top of the salad.  It was cooked to perfection.  Martha also had a great meal, Lobster Seafood Bake.  Good thing we were staying with them after the wine, dinner and drinks with dinner.  Nice time.

This morning we awoke to a much different day than our beach laying day that we enjoyed yesterday.   The Atlantic kicking up a bit, as is the wind.

We have been eyeing the Weather Channel and their tracking of Hurricane Matthew.

Over the next few days our agenda was to go to Charlotte, N.C. and Savannah, GA.
Ending Saturday in St. Augustine, Florida.  Well there is a candidate running for office around here named Forest Bradwerd.  His campaign signs are along side a lot of the roads here.  Very cute.

Well, as our route plans take us South head long into 80 mph winds, we are going to Run Forest Run ourselves.   Tomorrow we are heading 90 miles inland.   A route that will prevent us from seeing Charlotte and Savannah but may keep us from toppling over in the Hurricane also.  Wind predictions in the area we are going to are only 20mph.  We are keeping our Saturday reservation in St. Augustine as the Hurricane should have passed by then.  IF it hasn't we will wait until Sunday to move on.  So for the next couple of days we will most likely be sitting in the trailer.

I saw this sign and thought, maybe we should change the name of our BLOG.  What do you think?
We value your opinion and the fact that you are following us.   Thanks for that.  Stay Dry.

Day 63 - Wilmington, NC

Our trailer is parked half an hour from Carolina Beach.  We deserted it for two days to stay with friends who happen to have a very nice condo a stones throw from the beach.  First we went to visit a good friend from the past, Jim Miller.  He is in a senior alzheimer's home nearby.  He remembered having a '56 Yellow Oldsmobile with a Rocket 455 or was it 355 engine.  He let me drive it when I was just 16 and punch it.  The first fast car I ever got to drive.  I remember the thrill like it was yesterday.  He also had an old '34 flatbed truck with a three or four speed, I can't remember, but the only way to switch gears was to double clutch and he taught me how to do it.  He is 84 now.

Then we went to the beach for the day.   The water is warm and I am loving licking my lips and tasting the salt.

A perfect beach day as the hurricane approaches, only five days away so they say.

Martha and I have very different ideas of how to 'beach'.  She reads.....

I keep myself busy contemplating the world situation and other 'man' concerns.

This is the view from the window of the condo.   We are going out to dinner tonight.  We have not been out for a 'fancy' dinner since we left two months ago.  I am excited about it.

Thanks for visiting.  We should be crossing paths with Hurricane Matthew on Friday.  Oh boy.

Day 62 - Jacksonville / Wilmington, North Carolina

We had our first Foggy Drive this morning.   We left the RV Park just before 9am to drive to Jacksonville.  For the first hour of the drive it was really foggy.   Scary to drive in the fog especially with 14,000 pounds of trailer following you.  So I had to take it a bit slower than planned.  Once we got closer to Jacksonville it cleared up.  I thought it may get worse as it is closer to the Atlantic, but it didn't.  We met with two of our Nieces and part of their families at Applebee's at 11.  It is great to see them and they all look well in spite of escaping California years ago.  There is life on the East Coast.  Hummm.  Good life too.

We are set up now in Wilmington and tomorrow we will visit my brother-in-law and then friends of Martha's that live on Carolina Beach.  Tomorrow is also the birthday of our oldest son, John, pictured here with his Tahoe made friend in 1987.   Now in 2016 he will be 42.   Shocking as I am only 22 myself.   Maybe 23.

Hi John!   Happy Birthday from Mom and Dad.

Thanks for Joining us on our BLOG today.

Day 61 - North Carolina

Rain really pounded down on the trailer this morning.   It started about 6 and broke around 7:30 so we broke camp.  On the way to North Carolina it started again.  We dropped our 70mph freeway speed down to 30mph with our flashers on.   Everyone else did the same.   We could only see about twenty feet in front of the truck and at times not at all.   I was about ready to just pull over when it let up to just a shower.   The East Coast definitely gets some weather.  A four hour drive turned 4 1/2 to our next stop, Four Oaks, North Carolina.

We made one rest stop along the way.

After getting set up we went a few miles back where we saw a car show going on.  One of Bill Gorman's past adventures was on display.

Back at the trailer we added two more states to the map.  We will end this adventure with a hole across mid America and the far North.   Both are the subject of future ventures.  You can see the hole starting to happen as West Virginia remains empty.  Grand Pappy Amos and the girls and the boys would be sad we missed it. (Age limit required to understand that last sentence)

Tomorrow we are going to meet up with my Nieces at Applebee's in Jacksonville for breakfast/lunch and then Monday we are staying at a good friend of Martha's from Roseville, Diane Bramwell, at her beach condo for the night.   They lived across the street from us.  It will be a nice break from trailer living for a night.

I still have our BLOG address sign in the rear window of the trailer.   On the way down a car passed us and the passenger, a lady, held up her iPad, motioned to it, smiled and waved.   Funny.   Thanks for checking up on us today with YOUR 'I whatever' and for bringing your umbrella this morning.
